How Frank Sinatra Got His ‘Scarface’ Nickname

At birth, Frank Sinatra was initially pronounced stillborn due to his blue complexion and lack of breathing. He was born in his parents’ apartment kitchen in New Jersey, weighing an extraordinary 13.5 pounds. In the womb, Sinatra grew to an estimated 5’7″, and a forceps delivery was required to bring him into the world.

While the doctor focused on caring for Sinatra’s mother, his grandmother took the lifeless infant, ran him under cold water, and slapped his back, successfully reviving him. Adding to the drama of his arrival, Sinatra was intended to be named after his father, but a mix-up led the priest to name him after his godfather, Frank Garrick. Exhausted from the ordeal, his mother decided to leave the name unchanged.

The forceps used during his delivery left lasting marks, including facial scarring on the left side of his face, jawline, neck, and a cauliflower ear. As a teenager, these scars earned him the nickname “Scarface” from his peers. Throughout his career, Sinatra went to great lengths to conceal these insecurities. He regularly blotted out his scars before performances and avoided being photographed on his left side. His height was another source of self-consciousness, leading him to wear elevated boots to appear taller.

How Many Kids Did Frank Sinatra Have?

Frank Sinatra was married to Nancy Barbato Sinatra, Ava Gardner, Mia Farrow, and Barbara Marx Sinatra. With his first wife, Nancy, he had three children: Nancy Jr., Tina, and Frank Sinatra Jr. Both Nancy Jr. and Frank Jr. followed in their father’s footsteps, building careers in music.

While Sinatra is officially recognized as the father of three children, there has been speculation surrounding the possibility of investigative journalist Ronan Farrow being his biological son. Legally, Ronan is the son of Mia Farrow and Woody Allen, born in 1987—more than a decade after Sinatra and Mia Farrow divorced. However, ongoing theories about Ronan’s striking resemblance to Sinatra have fueled public curiosity and debate about a possible connection.
