RECAP: ‘Sister Wives’ Christine and David Host a Tacky Engagement Party at a Taco Joint!

The December 15th episode of Sister Wives opens with Kody and Robyn Brown getting ready for a date night. At the same time, Christine Brown and her fiancé David Woolley are hosting an engagement party at a very basic taco restaurant to celebrate their upcoming nuptials. It’s a very casual and unimpressive venue — definitely one step away from a fast-food joint like McDonald’s — and I’m left wondering why they chose this spot for such a significant event. Couldn’t they have asked for a private room?

Anyhoo, Christine is in full wedding mode, wearing a white dress and clearly indulging in taco after taco. But the tacos are a bit too messy for her dress, and taco juice stains her outfit as she digs in. Meanwhile, all of Christine’s children are there to support her, including Janelle Brown and her son, Hunter, adding to the family vibe of the celebration.

“So, David and I have only known each other for nine months,” Christine explains to the cameras. “It was a crash course in getting to know somebody.”

A cake is cut with the couple’s faces on it, and Christine is seen enjoying the moment. However, it’s clear that despite the joy of the occasion, there are also some underlying tensions, as Christine’s son, Paedon Brown quips, “Mom’s now engaged and she’s been dating him for 10 seconds, but we’re all very happy for her.”

Meri Goes on a Road Trip

Meanwhile, Meri Brown is hitting the road with her best friend Jenn, heading from Parowan, Utah, to Las Vegas to visit their friend Brandi. As the ladies sit down, Jenn brings up Kody, and Meri opens up about the pain of her breakup with him. She talks about the false hope she had for years that their relationship could be repaired. In particular, Meri mentions that Kody had given her a “list” of tasks to do in an attempt to save their relationship — but she now sees it all as just false hope.

In a candid confessional with producers, Meri admits, “I don’t know why I go out of my way to be nice when he so flippantly and comfortably talks s–t about me.” This reveals the deep emotional turmoil Meri is still processing regarding her relationship with Kody.

Meri then pulls out her phone to read a text message she sent to Kody after she was granted a “spiritual release” from their church, officially ending their marriage. She reads aloud to Jenn and Brandi, “Hi Kody, just wanted to follow up from the text I sent a couple weeks ago. Just wanted to let you know that I had a conversation with the leadership in Utah today, and the official release was granted.”

In another confessional, Meri explains the significance of the text. When she and Kody married in 1990, they had one ceremony that was both legal and spiritual. “It was really a mind game on me because I felt like, emotionally, that I was signing away the marriage,” Meri reflects, still processing the years of emotional complexity involved in her relationship with Kody.

The scene cuts back to Meri reading her final message to Kody, “I’m broken-hearted that our life came to this,” she says. “I will always love and respect you. Thank you for many years of joy. I hope you will truly have peace now and I release you from any responsibility or worry about me. I got this.” The words are heavy with finality, as Meri closes the chapter on her marriage to Kody for good.

Robyn Tells Kody About Aurora and Breanna’s Church Plans

Back in Flagstaff, Kody and Robyn finally have some alone time, but their date night quickly turns into a discussion about their children. Robyn brings up the topic of their daughters, Aurora and Breanna, wanting to attend church again. She tells Kody that she also wants to return to church herself, but Kody’s reaction is less than enthusiastic. He doesn’t think church is a “safe place” for him anymore, especially after the fallout from his previous divorces. Kody admits he’s not exactly comfortable with the idea of Robyn attending church on her own either.

“When I met Kody, he was very much involved in our church and from my understanding he was happy in our church,” Robyn, 46, reflects on their early days, remembering the connection she felt with him. She continues, “I mean, I wouldn’t have probably considered marrying him if I didn’t think he was.”

However, their relationship with the church changed after they went public with their polygamous lifestyle. Robyn explains, “I think really, the way that our church reacted to that really, kind of, threw him off, and it made him feel just like, ‘Wait, what the heck?’”

Kody agrees, and in a confessional, he adds, “I found that my faith started to contradict the religionist attitudes, sort of the gatekeepers.” He further explains that when the church started imposing rules on him, like telling him to cut his hair or act a certain way, it was a major turnoff. “I want to come sooner or later,” Kody tells Robyn, but she seems uncertain about where the family will end up worshiping.

Kody Keeps Robyn Under Strict Rule

Robyn, who is trying to keep the family connected to their faith, hints that she and the kids want to try new places of worship, but Kody is not on board with the idea of Robyn attending alone. He teases her, saying, “Well, you don’t want to go too long without me, because I don’t want some guy thinking you’re a single mom.” Kody reveals that he’s aware of other men’s interest in Robyn and that he’s worried about her being targeted.

“There’s a lot of men interested in Robyn,” Kody admits in a confessional, explaining how some men have been trying to get around him and make advances on her. “I’m mate guarding now,” he quips, revealing his protective instinct over his fourth wife.

Robyn reassures him, saying that she would wear her wedding ring and tell everyone she’s off the market. Despite this, it’s clear that Kody’s territorial instincts are strong, and he’s not happy about the idea of anyone else making a play for Robyn.

The couple shares a tender moment when Kody reflects on their first meeting in church. “The first time I saw you in our church, we made that gaze, that connection,” Kody recalls. Robyn teases that it was actually she who made the first move, but Kody insists that he looked longer and even thought, “That was probably inappropriate. She is most likely married.”

Kody and Robyn reminisce about their early days, and Kody says, “I want to know that God has been my wingman with you and that nobody can take you away.” Robyn smiles, recalling how she noticed Kody’s “laugh lines” the first time she saw him, and how she was immediately drawn to him.

The scene ends with Kody joking about protecting his “pride” and making it clear he’s not about to let anyone else come between him and Robyn.

It’s clear that for Kody, even after all these years, he’s not confident of his relationship with Robyn and unwilling to let anyone else in. Robyn, for her part, reassures him that she’s committed to him and that no one else stands a chance.
