Two goals in first two minutes as Kane returns from injury in Bundesliga

Harry Kane returned after almost three weeks out through injury as Bayern hosted RB Leipzig on Friday – but Jamal Musiala stole the show by scoring after a minute.

England captain Kane had a part in the opener with a pass to Michael Olise, who set up Musiala for the Germany international’s fourth goal in four games from close range.

Leipzig had been behind for under 60 seconds when Lois Openda surged into space and crossed for Benjamin Sesko to slot in.

The equaliser marked the first time in German top-flight history that two teams have scored in the first two minutes of a match.

Kane injury return

Bundesliga top scorer Kane had missed three league games and one in the Champions League with a hamstring issue and his absence was most keenly felt in Bayern’s 2-1 defeat at Mainz on Saturday – their first league loss since Vincent Kompany’s appointment as manager in May.

There was no need for Kane to restore Bayern’s early lead against Leipzig, though, as former Red Bulls midfielder Konrad Laimer completed a one-two with Olise by volleying them back in front after 25 minutes.

Laimer’s first league goal of the campaign was his second in three games after he netted in the 5-1 win at Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on December 10.

As if inspired by being able to once again call upon their most prolific player, Bayern then added a third courtesy of Joshua Kimmich.

The Germany midfielder struck from 25 yards in the 36th minute, ending his wait of more than a year for a league goal in spectacular fashion.

Bayern vs Leipzig

Kane has 19 goals in 17 Bundesliga and Champions League games in 2024/25, but the 31-year-old perhaps showed his rustiness from a presentable opportunity three minutes later, producing an uncharacteristically tame attempt that was routinely claimed by goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi.

Bayern started the evening four points clear of second-placed Bayer Leverkusen with a vastly superior goal difference after 14 games for both teams.

Marco Rose’s Leipzig had won their last two league matches and knew victory would send them second, three points behind Bayern.
