Bill Haney says he wants Gervonta Davis next for Devin Haney after Tank defends his WBA lightweight title against Lamont Roach on March 1st.
If Bill gets his wish, Devin will come off a long layoff to fight Tank (30-0, 28 KOs). He might have to drop to 135 or a catchweight of 137.
Bill Haney Wants Davis Bout
The contest would be perceived as a cashout for Haney, 26, who is coming off a loss and likely has an all-time low in self-confidence. Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) hasn’t fought since losing to Ryan Garcia on April 20th, and Bill says Dev will stay out of the ring for a year before fighting again.
“We not taking s**. Tank Davis when he finished with Lamont Roach. How about that?” said Bill Haney to Knockoutboxing86 TV, when asked who is Devin Haney fighting next.
It’s hard to tell the motives behind Bill Haney’s bringing up Tank Davis’s name as the guy he wants Devin to fight next. Could it be one of these reasons:
A. Clout chasing to get Devin’s name in the spotlight
B. Cash out on a big payday before retirement
C. Belief Devin can win
D. Career rebirth at 135 against smaller fighters
Devin Back At Lightweight?
Haney could reinvent himself by returning to 135 and using his massive size for that division, as he had before moving up to 140 in 2023.
Keyshawn Davis, a massive 135 with the frame of a welterweight [147], is getting away with melting down to lightweight to feast on smaller fighters. If Keyshawn could do it, Haney could join the party, rejuvenate his career, and get that big payday against Tank Davis.
Devin will have to make a quick move because Tank sounds serious about retiring after three more fights in 2025. He’s made a lot of money in his career, and he no longer seems interested in fighting beyond next year.
The loss to Ryan seems to have sapped Haney’s ambition. The two-division world champion has done nothing since being bludgeoned by Kingry last April.
