Former WBO Light middleweight champion Jaime Munguia (44-2, 35 KOs) was upset and stopped by EBU Silver middleweight champ Bruno Surace (26-0-2, 5 KOs) at 2:36 of the sixth round in a scheduled 10-round fight on Saturday night in Tijuana, Mexico.
In the first round, Munguia had a slight edge with both throwing punches after the bell, so referee Juan Jose Ramirez had to step in and call a halt.
In the second round, after a minute, Munguia landed a left hook to the chin and down went Surace for the first time in his career for an 8-count from Referee Ramirez. He managed to get to the bell. In the third round, Munguia had Surace on the defense the entire round, mostly against the ropes, and was fortunate to survive to the bell.
In the fourth round, it was all Munguia. With half a minute remaining Surace landed his best punch of the fight a right uppercut on the chin that rocked Munguia. In the sixth round Munguia had Surace against the ropes several times but couldn’t put enough punches together to finish Surace.
In the sixth round, Munguia landed a pair of lefts to the chin, having Surace against the ropes. Surace countered with a right on the chin, and down went Munguia on his back, barely beating the count at nine, but referee Ramirez saw enough and wisely called a halt. It took over ten minutes for Ring Announcer Jimmy Lennon, Jr. to announce the stoppage time for over ten minutes.

Junior middleweight Jorge ‘Chino’ Garcia, 32-4 (26), defeated Kudratillo ‘The Punisher’ Abdukakhorov, 20-4 (12), #158 ¼, of Andijan, UZB, over10 rounds.
In the first three rounds, Abdukakhorov outlanded Garcia. In the fifth round, Garcia was landing uppercuts backing up Abdukakhorov.
In the sixth round, Abdukakhorov continued switching to southpaw and going back to orthodox.
In the ninth round, Garcia finished the stronger of the two. In the tenth and final round, Garcia had Abdukakhorov hurt in the final seconds.
Scores 97-92, 99-90 twice.
In co-Main Event, Super Bantamweight Alan Picasso, 31-0-1 (17), knocked out southpaw Yehison Cuello, 13-3-1 (11) at 1:55 of the third round of a scheduled ten rounds.
In the first two rounds, it was all Picasso. In the third round, a left hook to the body dropped Cuello for the full count from Referee Juan Jose Ramirez.
Super Bantamweight Sebastian ‘Logan’ Hernandez Reyes, 18-0 (17), stopped Sergio ‘El Canalla’ Sosa, 14-5-3 (3) at 2:59 of the seventh round of a scheduled ten rounds.
In the first three rounds, Sosa worked on Hernandez’s body. In the fourth round, Sosa had Hernandez against the ropes for most of the round. In the fifth round, Hernandez came back holding his own.
In the seventh round, Hernandez left Sosa defenseless with a barrage of punches, which caused Referee Edgar Lopez to call a halt.
Feather WBC Youth Continental champ Christian ‘El Pelon’ Islas, 11-3-1 (7), lost to southpaw Juan Anacona, 13-1 (6), over eight rounds.
Anacona had an edge in the first three rounds. In the fifth round, Islas had his best round, though he suffered a bloody nose.
In the sixth round’s final seconds, the action was stopped when Islas complained about his right eye from an Anacona left. In the seventh round, the nose of the Islas was bleeding, and the right eye was partially closed. In the eighth and final round, Anacona had Islas on the defense, who was being backed up.
