As an online mattress reviewer, I’ve tested a lot of hybrid beds. Countless options with support coils have come and gone through our mattress-testing facility, and most of them are pretty similar. If I had a nickel for every time I’ve said the phrase “neutral hybrid feel” — believe me, I’d be a very rich man.

That’s why it’s always refreshing to get a more unique style of hybrid bed like the GhostBed Flex. This mattress combines support coils and various comfort elements to produce an interesting take on comfort — and don’t even get me started on its cooling features. In this review, I’ll discuss what our team likes about the Flex, what we don’t and who we see it working best for.

First impressions of the GhostBed Flex

The GhostBed Flex arrived at our space with completely free shipping. It showed up in a tall cardboard box, and similar to any other bed-in-a-box, we dumped out the contents, ripped off the plastic and watched the bed inflate. Since it’s an all-foam mattress, we noticed it looked a little misshapen right out of the box, but it looked completely normal after giving it a full night to sit out on our foundation and expand.

In the morning, it was time to test the bed out. Upon testing responsiveness, I initially noticed it had a neutral quality, but things got interesting the more I dug into the bed. It seemed faster to respond than a responsive memory foam mattress, but when I hopped on, I still experienced a nice sink-in sensation. On my back, I felt plenty of support with enough cushion for my shoulders and hips when I turned to my sides. That cover also felt a lot cooler than one found on a more standard hybrid mattress.

GhostBed Flex mattress firmness and feel

What does the GhostBed Flex mattress feel like?

Jon Gomez/CNET

To us, the GhostBed Flex feels like a neutral hybrid bed with a hint of memory foam mixed in. You get the slightest body-conforming quality from its sleeping surface, which also moves with you like a neutral bed. This is likely due to the bed’s memory foam layers being balanced out by the more responsive nature of the support coils of other neutral comfort elements.

All things considered, this mattress feel is perfect for those of us who want a body-conforming sensation in our bed but not too much of one. Denser memory foam options like Tempur-Pedic can be a bit overwhelming for some sleep styles, particularly combination sleepers who like to move around at night. A neutral bed with a hint of memory foam, like the GhostBed Flex, is great if you want a pressure-relieving mattress that also moves with you at night.

How firm is the GhostBed Flex mattress?

This bed is right around a medium on our scale, give or take. It presents sleepers with equal parts pressure relief and support, making it versatile enough to work for all sleeper types. Regardless of whether you like to sleep on your back, sides, stomach or some sequence of all three throughout the course of a night, you should be plenty accommodated by this option.

Getting a bed with a neutral firmness level like this is often a safe way to go, especially if you’re unsure as to how firm you want your bed to be. A medium firmness is pretty much the best of both comfort worlds, soft and firm at once. I personally sleep on a bed that’s around a medium, and I really enjoy the level of comfort it provides me with. If you want a super soft option, this isn’t necessarily it, but feel free to check out our Best Mattresses for Side Sleepers list to see some other suitable beds for that preference.

GhostBed Flex mattress construction

This mattress is 13’’ thick and composed of the following materials:

  1. On the bottom, you’ve got a thin layer of base foam and then the bed’s main support system of individually wrapped coils.
  2. Then you’ve got a responsive transition foam that adds some bounce to the mattress and acts as a buffer between the bed’s support and comfort layers.
  3. Towards the top, the GhostBed Flex has a couple of layers of gel memory foam for comfort. These give the bed its main sink-in, pressure-relieving feel.
  4. Above that — things start getting chilly. The brand’s Ghost Ice technology layer is right here, just beneath the bed’s quilted cover, which incorporates even more memory foam and cooling tech.

GhostBed Flex mattress performance

Motion isolation

This is an important thing to consider in your next mattress if you or your partner is an especially light sleeper. Sometimes, one person can wake up the other if they move around excessively or get up in the middle of the night. In that case, you’ll want a bed that deadens motion well. For a premium hybrid mattress, the GhostBed Flex absorbs a nice amount of cross-mattress movement. I highly doubt you’ll be jostling anyone awake on this particular bed anytime soon.

Edge-to-edge support

Being a more premium style of hybrid mattress, we’d say the GhostBed Flex has great edge support. When you apply your weight to the bed’s perimeter, its support coils and various comfort foams help keep you placed firmly along those edges. If edge support is a key consideration for you or your partner, we often recommend going with a hybrid mattress like this as opposed to an all-foam one.

Temperature

Unlike the average, hybrid mattress that usually sleeps temperature neutral, we’d say all the cooling features in the GhostBed Flex should definitely help to cool you down considerably at night. By default, we’d classify this as an active-cooling bed, but your bedding could impact the bed’s overall cooling capabilities. If you want to see even more online beds like this one, you can always check out our Best Cooling Mattress for Hot Sleepers list.

Durability

The GhostBed Flex should be durable enough to last average body types for at least the next 7-10 years, if not longer. When it comes to online mattress durability, we usually say that hybrid beds with support coils beat out all-foam support bases in the long run — foam degrades a bit faster than steel coils over time. For this reason, it’s easy to see why the GhostBed Flex holds up so well under long-term pressure.

Who is the GhostBed Flex mattress best for?

Jon Gomez/CNET

While this premium, cooling mattress checks a lot of boxes for many sleepers out there, it still might not be the most suitable for everyone. That said, here’s who we think it’ll work best for.

Sleeping position

Combination sleepers who switch between different positions at night will likely get the most out of the GhostBed Flex. Its medium firmness profile is supportive enough for back and stomach sleepers while being pressure-relieving enough to accommodate most side sleepers. All sleeper types should work out fine on this mattress.

When it comes to more specific sleeping preferences, that’s where things get a bit tricky. If you want an ultra-firm or soft mattress, this isn’t necessarily going to be the bed of your dreams. If you want more of a memory foam sensation in your mattress, there are other options worth your consideration. You can always check out our Best Memory Foam Mattresses list to see some other slower-to-respond beds.

Body type

The GhostBed Flex should be supportive enough to handle all body types: petite, medium or larger folks. If you’re heavier, you’ll probably prefer sleeping on a hybrid mattress like this one instead of a less supportive, all-foam bed. If you’re interested in checking out other ultra-supportive options for bigger people, feel free to peruse our list of best beds for heavy people.

GhostBed Flex mattress pricing

Size Measurements (inches) Price
Twin 38×75 inches $1,795
Twin XL 38×80 inches $1,995
Full 54×75 inches $2,095
Queen 60×80 inches $1,660
King 76×80 inches $1,995
Cal King 72×84 inches $2,015

One of my favorite things about this mattress is the price point it’s currently offered at — the queen size is surprisingly affordable. After a discount is applied, you can currently pick one up for just shy of $1,000. That’s a great deal for a cooling hybrid bed of this quality. As a brand, GhostBed usually offers promotions on their beds year-round, which get even sweeter around major holidays.

Trial, shipping and warranty

GhostBed also goes above and beyond with its policy set. The Flex mattress ships for completely free in a box, and once it’s in your possession, you get a 101-night trial period to try it at home risk-free. If you happen not to like it within that time frame, you can return it for free and get a full refund. On the other hand, if you decide to keep it, you’re backed by a 25-year warranty. Just be sure to use the right foundation for the bed. Otherwise, you could void your bed’s warranty.

How does GhostBed Flex compare to other mattresses?

GhostBed Flex vs. GhostBed Luxe

The main differences between these two premium GhostBeds come down to construction, feel and price. The Flex has coils for support, while the GhostBed Luxe has a dense support foam base. This makes the Flex better for supporting bigger body types in the long run. The coils in the Flex also make the mattress more responsive, giving it less of a memory foam feel than the Luxe. The GhostBed Flex is also considerably more affordable than the Luxe, which currently costs above the $1,500 range for a queen size after a discount.

GhostBed Flex vs. Nest Sparrow

These are two popular hybrid choices within the online space that are different in many ways. Both have a predominantly neutral feel, but the Nest Sparrow has more of a pronounced pillow top sensation. The sparrow is available in a variety of firmness levels and even comes with a replacement comfort insert. While you get more options with the Sparrow, the GhostBed Flex has a superior cooling advantage by comparison. A queen size GhostBed Flex is also much more affordably priced, but you do get better policies by going the Nest Bedding route.

The final verdict

This is a quality hybrid bed with a lot to offer the average Joe. It’s priced very reasonably, especially when considering it’s a more supportive cooling mattress with an accommodating firmness and feel. I’d definitely check it out if you want a nice mattress at a decent price.

You might like the GhostBed Flex mattress if:

  • You’re looking for a premium hybrid mattress
  • You want a bed with a hint of a memory foam feel
  • You want a bed that’s a medium firmness
  • You want an active-cooling mattress

You might not like the GhostBed Flex Hybrid mattress if:

  • You’re looking for an all-foam mattress
  • You want more of a memory foam feel in your bed
  • You want an especially firm or soft bed
  • You’re on a super tight budget

It’s actually a pretty wholesome story. The founder of GhostBed was apparently afraid of ghosts hiding under his bed when he was a young boy. He took that idea with him all the way up to when he started his own mattress company. Sounds like a dream — but it’s true.

Neither. Well, at least the Flex isn’t. It’s around a medium on our firmness scale, which means it presents sleepers with an even balance of support and comfort. While not being overly soft or firm, this firmness is accommodating for a wide variety of sleeping preferences.

Short answer, yes. All the GhostBed mattresses are made and manufactured in the United States. Additionally, all the materials used within their constructions are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning they’re constructed in an ethical, non-toxic fashion.
