Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be quite a bit of an early MCU reunion: Deadline reports that the Russo brothers have saved a dance for none other than Hayley Atwell herself.
The trade has word that Atwell will reprise her role as Peggy Carter in Doomsday. While Atwell has appeared multiple times in the MCU since the conclusion of Peggy’s ABC period spy piece Agent Carter and the character’s present-day passing in The Winter Soldier, both as Peggy in period-set sequences and as her multiversal variant Captain Carter in Multiverse of Madness and What If?, it’s interesting that Deadline specifically notes that she’ll be playing Agent Peggy Carter here again. io9 has reached out to Marvel for comment on the report, and will update this piece if and when we hear back.
It suggests that, for all the vagueness around this week’s earlier reporting that Chris Evans will return in Doomsday as well, rather than pulling a Robert Downey Jr. switcheroo and having him portray another character, Evans is most likely reprising the role of Steve Rogers in some capacity. In fact, Deadline says as much, further expanding on prior reports in 2021 that Evans was discussing a return to Marvel (the actor denied them at the time), adding that the potential plan at the time was to have Atwell also return as Peggy alongside him, in a standalone movie.
While those plans apparently fell through at a story stage, both Marvel and Atwell and Evans’ camps reportedly see Doomsday as the better opportunity to return both characters to the big screen. Just how, and in what form? Well, we’ll be finding that out, if at all, much more closer to Avengers: Doomsday‘s May 1, 2026 release date.
