Nathan Lyon takes the blame for the floodlights going off during India vs Australia Adelaide Test

Veteran Australia spinner Nathan Lyon took responsibility for the “Adelaide blackout” on the first day of the second Test against India. Nathan Lyon revealed that he asked the security guard to turn on the lights for a batting session, but the guard mistakenly turned off the stadium lights instead.

The second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Adelaide Oval witnessed two floodlight failures during Australia’s first innings on December 6. The lights went out twice in quick succession while Harshit Rana was bowling, leaving the young seamer visibly frustrated as he gestured in irritation.

I Reckon He Hit the Wrong Switch – Nathan Lyon

During a rain interruption on day one of the third Test between India and Australia, Nathan Lyon revealed the actual reason behind the two floodlight failures in Adelaide. Lyon, who was the night watchman, wanted to practice in the nets and asked a security guard to turn on the lights.

However, the guard accidentally turned off the stadium lights instead. Lyon explained that he and assistant coach Borovec were left sitting in the dark. The off-spinner acknowledged he would “take the blame” for the mishap.

“It came back to me that the lights went off twice. And you were the reason for that because you were the night watchman and wanted to have a hit. So, you told the guy to put the lights on in the nets, but he hit the wrong button and turned off the entire ground lights,” the host asked.

“I couldn’t believe it. I was sitting with Borovec, our assistant coach, in the dark, and the security guard asked if he should put the lights on. I joked, ‘Yeah, I need all the help I can get.’ Then suddenly, the lights went off,” Lyon replied.

“I said to Borovec, ‘I reckon he hit the wrong switch,’ but Borovec was like, ‘No way.’ So, we sat there in the dark for about 15 minutes waiting to have a hit. I’ll take the blame for someone not knowing how to turn the lights on!” he added.

Nathan Lyon Failed to Make Impact with Ball in Adelaide Test

Coming to the game, the Indian national cricket team suffered a heavy 10-wicket defeat in Adelaide. The hosts leveled the ongoing five-match series at 1-1 after India’s win in Perth. Lyon had limited opportunities to bowl in pace-friendly conditions in Adelaide. He bowled only one over, conceding six runs.

However, he retained his spot in the playing XI for the third Test match, which began on Saturday, December 14, at the Gabba in Brisbane. The Pat Cummins-led team made one change to their winning combination. Veteran pacer Josh Hazlewood returned from injury and replaced Scott Boland in the XI.
