Rohit Sharma set to follow R Ashwin’s lead and retire soon? India captain reveals

India National Cricket Team skipper Rohit Sharma has made a massive statement about his future after the third Test against the Australia National Cricket Team. He confirmed that as long as his body and mind are feeling well, he will continue playing.

India captain Rohit Sharma has come under a massive scanner for his poor returns with the bat in Test cricket of late. Things haven’t been as he would’ve wanted and this has seen him getting criticised a lot, especially with him being captain and not scoring.

Rohit Sharma struggles with the bat in the ongoing BGT 2024-25

Rohit Sharma, since the Test series against Bangladesh at home, hasn’t got any big runs. With him being the senior batter, the expectations no doubt are high for him, but the batter hasn’t lived up to that and has bagged low scores consistently, which has seen many calling him a burden on the team.

Rohit, in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 too, has struggled to get going. He left the opening spot for KL Rahul and has been batting in the middle order. But things haven’t worked out well for him in the middle order while batting at No.6.

Rohi has bagged failures in all the four innings that he has played and there have been calls related to his retirement as well. Even great Sunil Gavaskar said that the batter might step down and walk away after the last two games in the series.

I have not batted well, there’s no harm in accepting that – Rohit Sharma

But it seems like Rohit Sharma has no plans to walk away anytime soon. He admitted that he hasn’t batted well but claimed that in his mind, he has ticked all the boxes and he is very near to where he wants to be. He added that as long his feet, body, and mind are moving, he is happy with things for him. Speaking during the press conference, he explained;

“I have not batted well. There’s no harm in accepting that. But I know what’s in my mind, how I’m preparing myself. All those boxes are very much ticked. It’s just about spending as much time as possible, which I’m pretty sure I’m just there. As long as my mind, my body, and my feet are moving well, I’m pretty happy with how things are planning out for me.”

I’m feeling good about myself, to be honest – Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma admitted that although his numbers aren’t great, he is feeling good and is putting in hard work in preparations for the game. While elaborating on the same, he explained:

“Sometimes those numbers can tell you that it’s been a while since he’s got big runs. But for a person like me, I think it’s all about how I feel in my mind, what kind of prep I’m having before each game, and how I’m feeling about myself.

“That’s the most important thing. And I’m feeling good about myself, to be honest. Runs are obviously not showing that, but inside it’s a different feeling.”

The third Test match between India and Australia ended in a draw. The rain played a massive part in it, and both the teams will be heading into the fourth game with the series being levelled at 1-1. The next game of the series will be played from 26th December at MCG.
