Spence’s ‘Almost’ Return: Fundora Next

Errol Spence posted on social media today to let his followers know he plans to return to the ring soon for his long-overdue comeback. He showed a picture of a great white shark and said, “Almost.”

Errol will be challenging WBC and WBO junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs) in early 2025 in a still-to-be-announced fight.

Spence Being Wreckless

It’s a risky fight for Spence to take because he’s never fought at 154, but that’s his style. He doesn’t believe in taking tune-up fights. Fundora confirmed this week that Spence will be next.

The 34-year-old Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) has been collecting dust for the last 16 months since being blown out by Terence Crawford in nine rounds on July 29, 2023. Spence was coming off a 15-month layoff for that fight, and he looked terrible, getting dominated by the then 35-year-old Crawford.

The former unified welterweight champion Spence should have returned to the ring sooner, but this kind of layoff has become the norm for him. He’s been fighting irregularly since his car crash on October 10, 2019. Errol smashed his expensive Ferrari in Dallas, Texas, just 12 days after his victory over Shawn Porter on September 28, 2019.

Going up against the 6’5 1/2″ ‘Towering Inferno’ Fundora in his debut at 154 isn’t the smartest thing for Spence to do, but I don’t think he cares at this point in his career. Errol has made his fortune, and he can afford to be wreckless by jumping straight into dangerous fights without taking tune-ups.

No Patience

Like many fighters who have gotten accustomed to being involved in big fights, Spence doesn’t seem to have the patience to ease into his matches after long layoffs. He’s just wreckless; hence, he’s now paying the price, getting knocked out by Crawford and likely heading for another loss to Fundora.

If Spence loses to Fundora, it’s going to be interesting to see if he chooses to retire or continue fighting. You’d like to think that he’ll learn from his loss by being active, but it’s not likely. Again, he’s made his money and cutting corners.
