Sunil Gavaskar demands end to Yashasvi Jaiswal’s aggressive approach

Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has slammed Yashasvi Jaiswal’s reckless shot after the young opener’s early dismissal in the ongoing third Test match against Australia at The Gabba, Brisbane. Facing a mammoth target of 445 runs, Jaiswal’s dismissal was nothing short of disappointing.

Despite the pressure, Sunil Gavaskar was disappointed by Jaiswal’s attempt to flick a length ball that wasn’t even a half-volley, as it resulted in a simple catch to Mitchell Marsh at short midwicket on Day 3 in the ongoing third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Brisbane.

On Day 3, Mitchell Starc struck early, dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal on just the second ball the Indian opener faced. Starc bowled a 139kph half-volley on middle and leg, and Jaiswal attempted a flick to only chip it straight to Mitchell Marsh at short midwicket in Brisbane.

Jaiswal, who had been practicing that shot during the innings break, couldn’t believe his luck as he was sent back for just 4 runs off 2 balls at The Gabba. Starc grinned, sticking his tongue out in delight, while the Australian cricket team celebrated the early breakthrough against India.

Reflecting on his wicket, Sunil Gavaskar criticized Jaiswal for not being more practical at the crease. The commentator mentioned that the ball was still new, and the opening batter’s job was to see off that crucial period, not go after a risky shot.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, very, very disappointing: Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar said on ABC Sport: “It’s not the best of shots. You’re facing 445 runs, and I think it’s important for you to get your eye in. It wasn’t even a half volley, and you tried to flick that ball away, and it’s a simple catch. Very good field placing, very good captaincy by Pat Cummins for sure, but that is not the best of shots that you expect from an opening bat, particularly when your opposition has got 445. Your job now for that one hour was to try and stay at the crease. Yashasvi Jaiswal, very, very disappointing. He’s gone for just four.”

His dismissal for just 4 runs in such a pressure situation raised many eyebrows, with Michael Vaughan also slamming Yashasvi for not showing maturity with his approach, as he should have tried to solidify the innings rather than playing an unnecessary shot in the crucial Gabba Test.

Sunil Gavaskar calls Yashasvi Jaiswal’s aggression against new ball “utterly irresponsible”

With such a significant target ahead, this was a careless and avoidable mistake that left fans and experts like Michael Vaughan and Sunil Gavaskar shaking their heads. The former Indian captain slammed Yashasvi Jaiswal for going berserk at the Australian attack from the very first over in Brisbane.

The legendary batter slammed Jaiswal’s rash approach, saying there was a need for practicality over aggression against a new ball, calling the shot utterly irresponsible. Gavaskar also added that it was totally unacceptable that Yashasvi lost his wicket to a half-volley at The Gabba.

Gavaskar signed off by saying, “It’s all very well to be positive, but you also got to be practical, and the ball is new. It’s the first over; you can’t be looking to score 25 runs in the first over. It wasn’t even a half volley. I can understand if it was a half volley. Sometimes you’re not able to keep it along the ground. That I can totally understand. It wasn’t even a half volley. It was a length ball, and you were never going to be able to keep that ball down.”
